About the event
It is the Weekend, and what do we do on the Weekend? We hike of course! And if you were about to say'We get lazy and we get pissed...' SHAME ON YOU!!!!So to make yourself forgiven, join me on this pretty hike that will mix, a pretty village, a gorgeous countryside, the sea and a nature reserve. Isn't that great? Oh, and if you want to grab a bite or a drink afterwards, we probably will...
You will see castles, listed houses and cliffs, lakes, sandy and pebble beaches and most importantly, you will have a wonderful day out with some of the loveliest people you will ever meet.
I cannot remember if swimming is allowed but take your swimsuit just in case.
Now a peaceful and picturesque community, Winchelsea was once a major hub for the medieval wine trade and a sea port of national importance. The current town, which was founded in 1288, replaced an earlier town of the same name, known as Old Winchelsea, that was lost to coastal erosion in the late medieval period. Winchelsea retains its medieval setting on a hill surrounded by largely empty marsh, the original layout of the planned town and the largest collection of medieval wine cellars in the country with the possible exception of Norwich and Southampton.
Rye Harbour is a picturesque village and moorings near the Kent and Sussex border. The unique and interesting harbour, which runs along the river Rother offers much to the visitor. It has a busy yachting centre, a fishing fleet and some commercial shipping. A Martello Tower was built at Rye Harbour to defend the area against possible invasion during the Napoleonic wars. Today, lying unoccupied, it provides a picturesque setting.
The Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a Site of Special Scientific Interest . It has a network of footpaths which provide fascinating walks along the sea shore, across fields and large areas of shingle, lakes and ponds. There is the opportunity to observe wildlife from several excellent bird hides as well as seals who like to pop out of the water as you walk along the shore or the river.
And finally, Camber Castle, built by Henry VIII will be a highlight of the trip, a medieval castle lost in the middle of nowhere which will allow us to step in time.
See, there is plenty to see and do for all the tastes, so come and join me on a lovely day out in a pretty place.
