About the event
Well, well, well, are you a birder, a photographer? Or just want a day out in a stunning nature reserve? Well this is the right place for you! Elmley nature reserve is home to a variety of wildlife, birds in particular. This is their Kingdom and we are their guest. This trip will be a wildlife watching trip but there will be some walking, about 10 miles, flat.
THIS WILL BE A BIRDING DAY OUT SO IF YOU DO NOT LIKE OR DO NOT CARE ABOUT BIRDS, YOU WILL GET BORED. 😄I would not recommend to join if that is the case.
In Spring and summer, the place is home to birds normally difficult to see but that like to show off in there, they have resident little owls, long eared owls, barn owls, Marsh harriers, bearded tits, bitterns, Dartford warblers, and all the waders and herons you can dream of. In the winter, Hen harriers and short eared owls or penduline tits add to this cortege of feathers. August marks the beginning of migrations for birds of prey so it is a great time to visit for rare harriers, eagles or whatever we will be lucky enough to encounter
Although I wish to get as lucky as we were on the last trip; barn owl in broad daylight, little owl, yellow wagtail, marsh harriers and bitterns were amongst the beauties seen. We just need to wish for some luck.
We will try and see as many species as we can, some at close range but WE WILL NOT WALK THE ENTRANCE TRACK! The entrance track is legally a public right of way road but the wardens are trying to keep it free from disturbances so the only way to go there is by car. ( although a handful of those wardens can be a bit of a pain, most are lovely) If you wish we can book a tour by car but it will need to be agreed on the WhatsApp group.
The hike: there is only 1 path to reach the place so we will come back the same way giving us more chances to see interesting birds. Depending on the tides, we might be able to use a shortcut so let's see.
DETAILS:
PRICE: £15 for the guide's fee About £20 for the train ( Elmley charges people a fee at the entrance track but the path through the reserve gives us free access)
