About the event
Corfe Castle stretches across the width of the Isle of Purbeck, with coasts facing both the English Channel and Poole Harbour. It, therefore, includes sections of both the low-lying sandy heathland that lies to the north of the castle and the rugged Jurassic Coast upland to the south.
The name "Corfe" is derived from the Saxon word, ceorfan, meaning to cut or carve, referring to the gap in the Purbeck hills where Corfe Castle is situated. It has been an early settlement where the local Saxon tribe was living peacefully with and traded with the Roman invaders.
After a few pics from the top of the hill, we will begin our hike through the moorlands and along the sea in Arnes Nature Reserve, where, if we get lucky we might spot a few wintering spoonbills, a wonderful bird about the size of a stork and other rare wadders.
This hike will have a bit of everything from woods, hills, moors, birds and deer to Middle-Ages towns and the ruins of this famous castle.
We will not enter the castle but we will surely have a little stroll in the streets of the this absolutely beautiful village.
I have included something for both my hiking and wildlife groups so if you are open to walking and bird watching, this is a trip for you.
